Leh Ladakh: A Brief Overview

Leh is the main town of Ladakh, famous for its dramatic Himalayan landscapes, high-altitude monasteries, mountain passes, clear lakes, and Tibetan-Buddhist culture.

📍 Main attractions

  • Leh Palace – Historic palace overlooking Leh town.
  • Shanti Stupa – Beautiful panoramic views, especially around sunset.
  • Thiksey Monastery – One of Ladakh’s most impressive monasteries.
  • Shey Palace & Monastery – Known for its large Buddha statue and views over the Indus Valley.
  • Khardung La – High mountain pass traditionally associated with the route toward Nubra Valley.
  • Nubra Valley – Famous for sand dunes, monasteries, and spectacular mountain scenery.
  • Pangong Lake – The iconic high-altitude blue lake, around a 4–5 hour drive from Leh depending on conditions.
  • Tso Moriri – A quieter high-altitude lake and an excellent alternative/addition to Pangong.
  • Important: altitude acclimatization

Leh is at approximately 3,500 m (11,500 ft), so don’t rush sightseeing immediately after arrival. Spend your first day taking it easy, drinking fluids, and allowing your body to acclimatize. Avoid strenuous activity and alcohol initially.

    ✈️ Best time

For the classic road-and-lake experience, May to September is generally the most convenient period. Winter is dramatically different, with very cold conditions and some routes becoming difficult or inaccessible.

🗓️ Ideal duration

A 5–7 day trip is good for a first visit:

Day 1: Arrive in Leh + rest/acclimatization
Day 2: Leh local sightseeing
Day 3: Leh → Nubra Valley
Day 4: Nubra → Pangong Lake
Day 5: Pangong → Leh
Day 6: Monasteries/local sightseeing
Day 7: Departure
