Jammu: A Brief Overview

Vaishno Devi Temple, also known as Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan, is one of India’s most important Hindu pilgrimage sites. It is located in the Trikuta Hills near Katra, Jammu and Kashmir, at an altitude of roughly 5,200 ft (1,585 m).

🛕 The pilgrimage

  • The journey begins in Katra, the main base town.
  • Pilgrims travel approximately 12–13 km uphill from Katra to the shrine at Bhawan.
  • At the sanctum, devotees worship the three naturally formed pindis, traditionally representing Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, and Maha Saraswati.
  • Many pilgrims also visit Bhairon Nath Temple, further uphill from Bhawan. The Shrine Board operates a ropeway between Bhawan and Bhairon Ji.

🚶 Ways to reach Bhawan

You can choose:

  • Walk/trek — the traditional option; the route is paved and has rest areas.
  • Battery-operated vehicles — available on designated portions/routes.
  • Pony/mule services — availability and regulations can vary.
  • Helicopter — available between the Katra/Sanjichhat area and the shrine vicinity, subject to weather and booking.

📍 Best time to visit

Generally, March–June and September–November are comfortable periods for the pilgrimage. Winter can be quite cold, while the summer months can be hot during the climb. Weather can change quickly in the hills.
